You should clean your registry after uninstalling old Java versions, before installing the latest JRE.

  • Download RegSeeker (Freeware, Publisher: Hover Inc.)
  • Extract RegSeeker to C:\ or somewhere else on your HD (it will create backups of the things you delete then)
  • Start RegSeeker and enable the shown options:

  • Hit the "OK!" button, the scanning process starts at the bottom
  • Wait until RegSeeker stopped checking (you should see a Total: number now, displaying a value between 0 (highly unlikely) and 1500 - most users see 200 to 500 entries here)
  • Click one listed entry and press Ctrl-A (that will Select All)
  • If you are uncertain, you might want to check the list and deselect single items (in most cases it's perfectly safe to delete every item in the list). Additionally, if the option in the bottom left of the program window is enabled you automatically create a backup for recovery purposes.
  • Right-click one of the selected entries now and choose "Delete selected items"

  • Click "OK" on the confirmation window.
  • Close RegSeeker
  • Restart your PC
