Then you have a problem with one (or more) of four things:

Java
Your Settings may also be causing red smilies...
Your ISP may be filtering / blocking / throttling bittorrent traffic preventing you from communicating with trackers. You might check the list of known 'bad' ISPs and perhaps consider encryption options for Vuze traffic.
Your Azureus config file may be corrupted, close Azureus, delete it and the backup and restart Azureus, this can be done in windows using: DEL "%AppData%\Azureus\azureus.config*" and for *nix: rm -f ./Azureus/azureus.config
